Curatorial Statement: Undiscovered Lagos 2.0

Undiscovered Lagos 2.0, presented by Thought Pyramid Art Centre, offers a window into the dynamic and reflective perspectives of emerging Nigerian artists, each exploring deeply personal themes that resonate universally within the context of contemporary challenges. In a world where individuals face a myriad of obstacles—be it economic instability, political unrest, or the complexities of identity—these artists channel their experiences into powerful visual narratives. Their works stand as acts of resilience, reflection, and ambition, positioning them to excel not only locally but also on the global stage.

“The Melody of Youth” summarises the five works by Damilola Ajegbomogun. His collectables embody the vibrancy and potential of a generation navigating a complex reality. His work pulses with energy and movement, an attestation to the optimism and persistence of youth determined to shape their future despite the challenges they encounter. Ajegbomogun’s pieces act as a rallying cry for the potential that lies within, suggesting that creative energy will be essential for personal and societal growth.

“I am Who I am, Are You Your Real Self?” captures the essence of Chinaza Nkemka’s musings. Her collection delves into the theme of identity, posing critical questions about authenticity in a world where survival often demands conformity. Nkemka challenges both herself and the audience to confront societal expectations, reminding us that staying true to one’s essence can be a radical act of defiance. Her work offers a stark commentary on the personal and social dimensions of identity, positioning her as a unique voice in global contemporary art.

“Photograph Your Thoughts” underlines the cinematic delivery of Aremu Olatunji for “Undiscovered Lagos 2.0.” Like a magician but through timely clicks, Aremu captures the interplay of memory, perception, and reality, compelling us to consider how our thoughts shape our actions and, ultimately, our futures. His photographic reflections underscore the power of introspection and documentation, making him a profound storyteller sure to take over the global stage. Olatunji’s works invite viewers to engage with their own experiences, reflecting on how the past informs the present.

“Let’s Heal Together” entirely packages Ganiyat Abdulazeez’s healing pieces. Her works focus on individuals navigating a world marked by incomplete health and uncertainty. Her pieces extend an invitation for collective healing, emphasizing the importance of mental and emotional well-being in times of difficulty. Her works advocate for a space of reflection and emotional recovery, positioning her as an artist who speaks not just to a specific context but to a universal audience attuned to the themes of healing and connection.

“Make Your Best Move, Now” brings all of Azeez Oladimeji Salami’s offerings into one capital view. Through his collectables, Azeez provides a metaphorical exploration of life’s challenges, likening the experience to a game of chess where strategy is key. Salami’s work reflects the careful balance individuals must maintain between ambition and the structural limitations they face. His pieces encourage viewers to think critically about their decisions in the face of uncertainty, a message that resonates on a universal level as people navigate volatile circumstances across the globe.

“What’s Your Vision Like?” by Moses Oyeleye asks an essential question, urging both the artists and the audience to define and refine their vision for the future. In a complex world where clarity can often feel elusive, Oyeleye’s work prompts us to look beyond immediate challenges and focus on the clarity of our purpose and dreams. His art serves as a reminder that despite the haze of our current pain, vision and determination will ultimately light the way.

Together, these artists craft a cohesive narrative that speaks to the struggles, dreams, and potential of humanity. Their works reflect contemporary challenges and inspire hope for a future where creativity, strategy, and vision can lead to transformative change. As these artists emerge from their individual experiences, they are sure to make their mark on the global art scene, using their unique voices to resonate far beyond their local context. Undiscovered Lagos 2.0 celebrates their resilience and their capacity to inspire a global audience.
