‘Being Us’: An Exploration of Nigerian Life Through Art by Somtochukwu Obi
[Lagos, 17 August 2024] – Thought Pyramid Art Centre is proud to present ‘Being Us,’ a compelling new series by renowned artist Somtochukwu Obi. This solo exhibition delves into Nigerian life, portraying the diverse stories, experiences, places, and lifestyles that define the nation.Central to the series is the compositional device known as Rückenfigur (literally “back-figure” or “Figure from the back” in German), or in local Igbo, azụ ọgụgụ (“Back Figure”) and ọgụgụ si n’azụ (“Figure from the back”). This technique positions a Nigerian figure seen from behind at the heart of each piece, contemplating the surrounding landscape of experiences, memories, and narratives. This central figure serves as a powerful symbol of introspection, as it gazes upon the rich tapestry of its own story and the broader Nigerian experience.
‘Being Us’ will be enhanced by an artist talk on September 7th, titled “Being a Self-Taught Artist: What It Takes to Excel in the Art Industry.” The panel will feature successful self-taught artists Ikechukwu Ezeigwe and Michael Dubby, along with the esteemed Salako Olajide from the Universal Studios of Art. The discussion will be moderated by Ovie Omatsola, the curator of the exhibition. During this talk, Obi and the panelists will provide valuable insights into the challenges and dedication required to thrive as a self-taught artist in the competitive art industry.
‘Being Us’ offers an intimate look at both the artist and the collective experiences of his fellow Nigerians, providing a deeper understanding of the Nigerian experience through art. We invite you to join us at Thought Pyramid Art Centre to explore this unique and evocative series.
